Except from mother, and some don’t get that

Required of us is a stiff upper lip

And superhuman skill to shake off the past

We’re taught from birth we’re only good if we’re useful

Only of value to fulfill someone’s need

There’s no appreciation had without conditions

As we are never is enough just to be

And force a smile in the face of it

You are considered replaceable

Pick up the pace

Soldier on, then wait

But it’ll do no good

Welcome to manhood

There’s no respect unless we’ve met expectation

Ignoring pain, displaying patience and strength

We’re starved of affirmation, love, and attention

While being fed hidden intentions instead

Meet ridicule if you let show too much feeling

But you’ll be judged if thick skin becomes hard shell

Take pride or rest and it will guilt you of stealing

Never to feel enough for others or self
